Civic Learning and Community Engagement

Doing anything to promote the welfare of other students in vital to the success of any campus and ultimately the society we live in. Although this seems difficult to achieve, I do personally believe small acts lead to impactful changes so whether it starts with LEAD consultants and ends with the Mason campus or the globe I know our impact will make a difference.

I quickly learned that the fastest way to truly understand another culture and get the most out of an experience is to actually engage with one another. I saw the effects of community engagement and how voices together triumph loudly over an one voice. Whether it was participating in protests on campus bringing awareness to the policing of the black body, or standing with students who have not heard from their families in Nepal, each time the community engaged great things happened. It ranged from heightened awareness to issues effecting our world to helping others get the money they need to make a difference in their communities. It was through these type of engagements that made the most difference on campus.

Civic learning extends beyond the classroom and is truly applied through community engagement. Understanding this is so important because we cannot truly know our stance on anything until we are tested with real life experience.
