Through working with the LEAD office I learned how important cultural competency is. I also learned how cultural competency is hard to achieve because there are so many cultures to account for. It is the effort that is made to get to learn more about different communities that makes the difference. It is the art of learning how to ask questions rather than make assumptions that shows you are striving to achieve a higher level of social and cultural awareness. Always finding out the truth before labeling anyone with a personal truth is important to cultivating and maintaining meaningful relationships.

Whenever I step into a space that is not one that I am familiar with I automatically assume that I do not know anything. I rather assume I know nothing than be embarrassed to assume I know everything and be completely wrong. This not only enhances my experience in the space. It allows me to get something more than another workshop experience out of the time spent there.
